The Funny Farm: Stories Of Chicks & Eggs

You know the old adage, “Which came first: the chicken or the egg?” At the end of the day it doesn’t really matter because we love them both. Chickens can be challenging, but also beautiful and loads of entertainment. We think of their eggs as an added bonus, in that, they are often pretty and always great to eat. The following stories also prove that just like their parents, they, too, can bring us a few chuckles.

Martha laid her first egg  I’m so stinking excited. She yelled ALL day yesterday and now the other six hens are probably terrified thinking they’re next. – Lisa Terry-Armbruster

First time chicken mom and nothing prepared me for how emotional it feels to find eggs for the first time! So proud of my girls. If anyone needs me I will be giving these hard working babes treats all day. – Robin Houser

This is Hildy. She’s a jerk! She likes to peck a single hole in eggs. I had to put my fake eggs up for a bit because Deloris was broody. I have been making sure I keep the eggs collected regularly and it has worked great. Her favourite is to come and peck an egg if she knows I can see her do it. I have had her for two years now and she has always been this way so I am convinced she does it on purpose. Today was no different. I opened the nesting boxes to check for poop or eggs first thing in the morning and like always here comes Hildy.  Only today I forgot my basket and broke my number one rule. Yes, I put the egg in my pocket and yes my number one rule is not the only thing I broke today. To make things worse I swear Hildy saw it and was laughing at me. This is only one of her many jerky behaviours. – Unknown

This lady is something else. She kept escaping from our coop and fenced in area and RUNNING back up to the house trying to get in. Pecking at the front door then to the back door and back to the front again. She was acting stressed. I kept putting her back in the coop in a nesting box (I could tell she wanted to lay an egg). After five trips back to the nesting boxes, I finally gave up and let her come inside. I gave her a blanket, and then a towel, for her to make a nest with but that just wasn’t good enough. It wasn’t until I gave her this fluffy cat bed that she decided it was good enough to lay her egg. What a trip.  Anyway, thank you for this beautiful teal egg Miss Gwen! These chickens crack me up. Doesn’t get much better than fresh eggs delivered right at your door! – Leanne Brander

For anyone that has abandoned eggs, that you never knew existed or couldn’t reach and temps are over or close to 100F, this is what happens.

I walked out to feed my chickens and saw this little tiny black baby trying desperately to get under a frizzle bantam rooster. The rooster was trying to get away, like the baby was from a one night stand and he didn’t want to pay child support.

Me confused, ‘cause I ain’t got no baby mommas currently, picked the little guy up, snuggled him and told him not to worry, I’ll be his momma now. I started my wildlife incubator and then went looking, not finding anymore babies. Skip to the following afternoon, went to gather eggs, heard a faint cheeping and followed the sound. Way back in a broken cabinet in our shop, I opened the door to a little Polish hen, cold and scared, along with 15 other eggs. Somehow some of my hens found their way into that side of the shop (they have the other side), found a cozy spot to build a very large clutch in secret, then ditched them. Out of 15 unhatched eggs, one was still alive and about a week away from hatch. So folks, if you happen upon a new baby and are as confused as I was, remember, at just the right temperature  hidden eggs can still hatch.

The soft fluffy rag, was to help little pip feel, not so alone at night. He/she would snuggle up to it, when I wasn’t able to carry him around. – Tonya Richey

This is Baby. She came from an egg that didn’t hatch. Three eggs did and mama chicken left the nest. I put the egg in the incubator and hoped for the best. Well, the best was Baby! Born four days after her siblings and raised by humans. She thinks she is a pigeon. We refuse to stifle her dreams. Just a happy post of a chicken who is not sick or dead. – Unknown
