I used to pick up spent coffee grounds for my compost from Starbucks every week. They kept a bin in their walk in dumpster area and allowed me to take whatever I wanted.
I found this discarded bakery rack and picked it up thinking it might come in handy. I ended up mounting it horizontally as roost bars in my coop.
It’s easy to clean and everyone has their place without getting too close to their neighbours. Best thing is it was totally free.

Ooh, gotta love the free stuff! It’s hard not to be a hoarder when the items are still perfectly good. We have been given several things that we’d held onto just knowing that one day they’d come in handy.
And when people know you’re looking for materials, something almost always comes your way. For example, a friend of my husband’s is in construction. He works for a developer building new homes in the city. They frequently fill dumpsters with things that are totally usable, but can’t be left at the job site when they’re done working.
Friend brought home a trailer full of used concrete forms. The CO was replacing them with new ones because the plywood attached to them was getting chipped, but the heat treated lumber for the frames still looked brand new. Friend let us have half his pile & we built 5 raised beds in our garden for only the cost of the screws!

Yes, I’ve seen a couple. Possibly not all of them. I’ve been jumping around the site, you know? The amount of food you’ve saved is astounding ! It’s funny how you don’t think much about one or two little things at a time, but when you add it all up, it’s incredible. Decor, building materials, food – it’s so much! Saves you money, feeds your flock & keeps that stuff out of the dump. I love it. I’ll be sure to catch up on any of the free cycle posts I may have missed.

That’s why I like making lists – it really gives you an idea of everything you’ve saved from the landfill or picked up for free.
