The Funny Farm: All About Eggs 2

You know the old adage, “Which came first: the chicken or the egg?” At the end of the day it doesn’t really matter because we love them both. Chickens can be challenging, but also beautiful and loads of entertainment. We think of their eggs as an added bonus, in that, they are often pretty and always great to eat. The following stories also prove that just like their parents, they, too, can bring us a few chuckles.

So apparently my little egg ‘donation’ setup has officially gone neighbourhood-wide. One of my neighbours has been getting eggs from me once a week, and today he showed up saying his friend heard about it and wanted in too.

I said sure and gave him the basics, like rinsing/washing them properly before eating. He had a few questions, but the highlight was him asking if he needed to bleach the eggs when cleaning them. Then he casually asks if he could hatch them, so I explained I don’t keep a rooster because they’re not allowed in city limits. He looked me straight in the eye and said, “Do you need a rooster?” Sir… yes.  If you want chicks, the eggs have to be fertilized.

He said he’d have to check online because he wasn’t entirely convinced. I swear this man was probably in his late 60s or early 70s and dead serious the whole time – Unknown

Olive laid her very first egg. Yay! Except it was almost two hours ago and she has NOT stopped singing the egg song since. I saw her lay it and took the egg right away, but she’s just wandering around the yard being loud as heck. Is this just because it’s her first time and she’s confused? She’s by far my loudest chicken so I’m sure the neighbours are wondering WTH by now. – Unknown

I know a lot of my non-chicken friends won’t get this, but today one of my young hens that has just started laying kept harassing me to go to the coop. I went out, then she jumped into her nest box and started making herself cozy.   I thought nothing of it and carried on with animal chores but she came back and started doing the same thing again. I went with her to the coop and I sat down.  She fluffed up her nest and got me to sit with her while she laid her egg. I feel very privileged that she sees me as a safe flock member to lay her eggs around. In over ten years of having chickens this has never happened before. – Kristy Hodge

Angelica’s doing her part over here by cutting out the middle man by laying directly in my egg collection basket first thing in the morning  I fricken love chickens – Bridget Lemieux

The Blue Egg Bandit strikes again! I put a camera inside the coop so now these sneaky hens can’t hide from me! Can you believe I sat in the coop all day yesterday and the second I stepped out she laid that blue egg.  She’s good, but not that good. The mystery hen’s days of secret laying are numbered. Stay tuned: the Blue Egg Bandit is as good as caught now. – Kimmie Kimmie
